2008 Chrysler Ignition Changes, by Michael Hyde
Many Chrysler, Dodge & Jeep models have changed for 2008. The ignitions are now plastic electronic modules with no actual lock parts such as tumblers.
Models affected are the 300, Caravan, Charger, Commander, Grand Cherokee, Journey ('09), Magnum, Town & Country.
All models will use a similar looking remote type "key". From 3 buttons all the way up to 7 buttons, depending on options.
There is no programming available for MVP or TCODE.
Only the StarMobile or StarScan dealer tools will program these new models.
StarMobile & StarScan are available from National Auto Lock Service, Inc.
In Stock & Ready to ship!
There is a Emergency key available, also known as the "POD" key. Since there are no tumblers in the ignition (module) switch, you only need to cut it for the doors.
PODS Available from National Auto Lock Service, Inc.
The POD key uses a STRATTEC 692352 transponder chip, as shown from the cut out.

Here's a look at the "Ignition" switch (module).
The Remote "key" as it sits in the Ignition switch.
Lets take the Ignition switch apart.
The module is made by the large global electronics company Siemans.
Unsnap the back cover and you will the module circuit board held in by 2 security screws.
Remove the board and you find a couple of interesting items.
From this picture you can see the 3 small switch's that make contact.

On this side you see the "gate" like fence that is what appears to be a antenna for communication.
A view from the top with the circuit board removed.
A electronic solenoid is mounted in the module housing.
The electronic solenoid is what blocks the so called "Keyway" from turning until the correct identification is supplied to the vehicles immobilizer system.

Here's a look at the POD key inserted into the module.
A close-up of the inside of the module with the POD key inserted.
Since there are no tumblers to activate any mechanical mechanism - any key can be inserted. However, only a pre-programmed Remote or POD key will release the solenoid to turn the "Ignition" to ON and START.
